Legionnaires Disease
Legionnaires’ Disease is a rare but serious type of pneumonia caused by breathing in tiny droplets of water that contain
Legionella bacteria
. These bacteria can grow in domestic water systems – especially if the water isn’t hot or cold enough or if it’s been sitting still.


Top Tips to Stay Safe
- Keep hot water hot – It should be heated to at least 60°C (don’t change boiler settings).
- Keep cold water cold – It should stay below 20°C.
- Keep water moving – Use taps and showers regularly.
Using Showers Safely
- If a shower isn’t used often, run it for 2 minutes every week.
- Stand back while doing this to avoid mist.
- Clean and descale shower heads every 6 months (or more often if needed).
